Stem Cell Banking

Private cord blood storage has been an established industry in North America since 1992. Cord blood is a rich source of hematopoeitic (blood) stem cells, but a very poor source of mesenchymal stem cells. Following cord blood harvesting the cord itself is usually discarded. Yet TRT has shown that the tissue around the vessels of the umbilical cord is the richest source of mesenchymal stem cells ever described. This knowledge has recently been independently confirmed by others (see Schugar et al and Farias et al.).

For those parents already interested in cord blood storage, the opportunity now exists to also store the richest source of mesenchymal stem cells – HUCPVCs.

In Canada, thousands of parents have taken advantage of this opportunity through TRT licensing our platform technology to CReATe Cord Blood Bank.

Our patented technology allows freezing and storage of your child’s umbilical cord cells collected at birth for future use. As the umbilical cord is currently discarded as medical waste after the full term birth of a baby, storing this new source of stem cells provides future bioinsurance without compromising the health of either mother or baby. Cryogenic storage provides a stabilized environment for the cells to be kept in liquid nitrogen at a constant temperature of -196C, proven to maintain cell functionality after thaw for future clinical use. Available only through our licensees.
