Scientific Poster: Human Umbilical Cord Perivascular Cells are Immunoprivileged and Immunomodulatory in vitro: (6/21/2007)

The perivascular tissue of the human umbilical cord contains a rich source of mesenchymal precursor cells, which we have called human umbilical cord perivascular cells. In fact, the perivascular niche has recently been shown to be the source of mesenchymal progenitors in many organs and bone marrow-derived multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs, also known as mesenchymal stem cells), are themselves considered perivascular in origin.

Scientific Poster: Human Umbilical Cord PeriVascular Cell (HUCPVC) Clones Determine Mesenchymal Stem Cell Identity (6/20/2007)

Tissue resident progenitors that give rise to connective tissue have been isolated from a variety of tissues including bone marrow, fat, muscle, placenta, umbilical cord and foetal liver; are generally thought to be resident in the perivascular compartment in these tissues; and are commonly called "mesenchymal stem cells" (MSCs)...

U of T team discovers stem cell jackpot (2/9/2005)

University of Toronto researchers have discovered a treasure-trove of stem cells that could one day help repair broken limbs and ease bone marrow transplants. The source: a region of the umbilical cord that holds an abundant supply of connective-tissue stem cells — the basic building blocks for the body's bone, fat and ligament tissues.
